Baymedix™ FR is a new range of raw materials for functional medical wound dressings developed by Bayer MaterialScience that not only help wounds to heal but also make innovative designs possible. The dressings are based on polyurethane foams with a specific combination of properties and can be combined with Platilon™ thermoplastic polyurethane (TPU) films which are water-vapor permeable and allow the wound to breathe. |
These environmentally compatible aqueous products expand Bayer MaterialScience’s Baymedix™ range of innovative materials for medical technology. The program also includes raw materials for lubricious coatings – for stents and catheters, for example – and for active-ingredient-releasing coatings. The company has also established its own research and development center in Sheffield, England to provide customer support.
Wound dressings based on Baymedix™ FR are noted for their high mechanical strength, flexibility and biocompatibility. They absorb aqueous fluids like wound secretions quickly before they can escape, and do so without the foams expanding. Platilon® films are skin-friendly, protect wounds from dirt and microbes, and promote rapid healing.
One outstanding characteristic of the foams is their thermoformability. This enables the wound dressings to be preformed for a particular application and to retain their shape for the duration of the treatment. If no particular demands are made on shape, however, the dressings can be supplied in roll form.
