Considerations for Hydrophilic Surface Coatings on Medical Devices

Disposable medical devices used for interventional procedures usually require coatings to modify surface
properties. Desirable modifications include enhanced biocompatibility, lubricity, drug elution, anti-microbial character and reduction in the risk of restenosis. Of these, lubricious, hydrophilic coatings constitute an important class that can simultaneously reduce the force necessary to insert the
device in the body, reduce thrombus formation, and reduce abrasive damage to tissues.
