Zeltiq uses a tissue cooling technology to target and eliminate fat bulges and pads without harming the skin.

The science behind the Zeltiq Procedure – Cryolipolysis – was developed by dermatologists at Massachusetts General Hospital in Boston, an affiliate of Harvard Medical School.

According to a clinical study, the Zeltiq Procedure can reduce the fat layer thickness by an average of 22.4% within two to four months post-procedure after a single procedure.

Richard Burgmeier of Massachusetts General Hospital said using advanced cooling to eliminate fat cells is advantageous compared to existing devices which utilize heat, sound waves or other mechanical techniques.

"The proprietary Zeltiq cooling technology induces fat cells to undergo a process of natural fat cell removal which reduces the thickness of the fat layer," Burgmeier said.
