VisionCare has developed the tiny telescope implant to improve vision in patients with end-stage age-related macular degeneration (AMD), israel21c.org reported.
The tiny telescope increases central vision images over a wide area of the AMD-affected retina, while the non-operated eye offers peripheral vision for mobility and orientation, the company said.
Israel21c.org has quoted VisionCare R&D GM and VP Eli Aharoni as saying that the new device provides a practical solution to a common problem which currently has no other surgical alternative.
"Implantation is performed as an outpatient procedure by a cornea or cataract surgeon, followed up with rehabilitation by optometrists and occupational therapists," Aharoni said.
In November 2010, the company has appointed Richard Powers as EVP, as it expands management capabilities and adds resources during the company’s commercialization of its products designed to improve vision in patients with end-stage AMD.
VisionCare president and CEO Allen Hill said Powers will initially be responsible for company’s financial and administration activities, and will assume additional responsibilities as VisionCare grows.
