As per the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, around 129 Americans die each day from a drug overdose and more than 78 of these deaths are a result of opioids.
The iKeyp is claimed to be the first Internet of Things integrated device that will disrupt the cycle of prescription drug theft and abuse.
The patent-pending iKeyp is said to provide a simple way to protect medications that fits into existing daily routines.
Solo’s smartphone-enabled iKeyp, which can be easily installed, connects to the Internet to provide owners with real-time security alerts and intelligent medication reminders.
The iKeyp provides real-time time alerts and reminders through text and email or mobile app, as well as audible and visual alerts for non-smartphone users.
It also features water-resistant digital combination keypad and fail-safe physical key access.
The company plans to commercially sell the iKeyp device from this fall.
Solo Technology Holdings founder and CEO Jeffrey Hermann said: "The abuse of prescription medication, particularly pain relievers such as opioids, is rampant in America and must be abated.
Solo Technology Holdings president and COO Mitch Danzig said: "The iKeyp is a modern, intelligent and convenient product that can serve as one solution in helping break the chain of prescription drug theft and addiction.”
Solo Technology has also partnered with The Stutman Switalski Group to educate the public on the importance of drug security.
