The 1/18in OV6946 is said to capture 400 x 400 pixel resolution images and video with better color fidelity in an extremely compact 0.9 x 0.9 mm package, providing enhanced camera solution for minimally-invasive and reusable endoscopy.
OmniVision senior marketing and business development manager Tehzeeb Gunja said: "To reduce patient trauma and shorten recovery time, doctors are turning to smaller, reusable endoscopes to deliver the images and video required during a medical procedure.
"Currently, there are no other image sensors available that offer the level of high performance and image quality in such a compact and power efficient form factor."
Using an advanced 1.7µ OmniBSI+ pixel, the new sensor captures 400 x 400 resolution images and video at 30 frames per second (FPS) and enables minimally invasive endoscope module designs with a width of 1.65mm and height of 5mm.
Currently, the OV6946 is available for sampling and will be commercially available from the third quarter of this year.
