The new tool is designed to offer precision and safety for surgeons when performing arthroscopic procedures and lower costs per procedure.

The FDA clearance was issued for the tool’s cutting, vaporization and coagulation of soft tissue during arthroscopic surgical procedures.

Operating with a standard saline irrigation solution, the device features an efficient tip design to lower saline temperatures.

It is also compatible with standard electrosurgical generators which already present in ambulatory surgical centers and hospital operating rooms.

Bovie said it is currently assessing options to commercialize the PlazXact, including the potential sales channel partnerships.

Bovie Medical CEO Robert Gershon said: “Over the course of the last two years, we have invested in further developing Bovie’s R&D capabilities to take advantage of opportunities within our existing product portfolio as well as to leverage our deep domain experience in the manufacture of advanced energy products.

“The PlazXact is our first entry into the arthroscopic surgery market, and we expect to launch additional growth products in 2017 and beyond.”

Bovie Medical will manufacture the PlazXact tool with shaft diameters of 3.3mm, 2.4mm and 1.8mm to operate with electrode face angles of 90°, 50° and 60° respectively.

The 3.3mm models will be manufactured in both aspirating and non-aspirating versions. The two others will be offered in non-aspirating versions only.
