PositiveID is using the technology in the development of GlucoChip glucose-sensing microchip.
The technology can also be employed in the technologies developed by MicroFluidic Systems, a company which PositiveID has agreed to acquire.
One or more microelectromechanical system (MEMS) devices inside the sensor register physical changes reflecting glucose levels in vivo, which are communicated via integrated electronics to an external reader.
Surface chemistries for glucose binding to the MEMS devices have been developed by the Company in conjunction with partner RECEPTORS and are exclusively licensed to PositiveID for this application.
PositiveID said the wireless molecular sensor described in the patent application, which is battery-free, represents an alternative to frequent finger pricks or other painful and/or harmful glucose monitoring methods for certain diabetic patients.
