The LIMS is a functional data and sample management system which is established to improve the management of laboratory workflow and enables bi-directional communication between physicians and the lab.
It also delivers the laboratory data and patient data management to scientists and technicians involved in clinical and molecular diagnostics research.
Thermo Scientific Clinical LIMS is being used by Foundation Medicine for its cancer diagnostic test.
Foundation Medicine president and CEO Michael Pellini said the information will enable physicians to target the molecular subtype of each patient’s cancer.
"The information technology necessary to do this must be able to manage and enable a convergence of lab sample tracking data, protected personal information and a analysis pipeline specific to our product offering," Pellini said.
Thermo Fisher Scientific Informatics vice president and general manager Dave Champagne said its Clinical LIMS fills a need in the field of personalized medicine that supports the delivery of results from the lab directly to the patient’s bedside.
