iFS Femtosecond Laser’s approval facilitates surgeons to make bladeless arcuate incisions during surgery and customize the incision for each individual patient.

Abbott said study data support that iFS Femtosecond laser creates arcuate incisions safely and effectively as prescribed by the physician, and meets with applicable safety standards.

Currently iFS Laser is being used to create Lasikflaps and other corneal incisions in the eye and is the fifth generation of IntraLase technology.

Abbott Medical Optics senior vice president Jim Mazzo said, "This is an important step as we look to utilize Femtosecond laser technology as a potential standard of care during the cataract procedure."
